Italy (Home 1999)

With so many Italian sportswear companies around, it was about time that the Italian team was again supplied by one of them. So, after the 1998 World Cup it was time for Turin based company Kappa – the second switch of supplier in the 1990s. The new look Italian team also had a new coach in goalkeeping legend Dino Zoff who modernized the rather pragmatic style of predecessor Cesare Maldini. The qualification for EURO 2000 started with a bang, but during the end of the campaign things went a bit awry with the team only managing two draws against Belarus and losing at home to Denmark. Still, they finished top of their group and were well on their way to EURO 2000.

While the teams style was updated, Kappa issued a wonderfully retro-looking Italy jersey in a very deep blue tone and a V-neck collar. Gone was the FIGC logo in place of the more traditional Italian shield which was now adorned with three stars. On the player’s right is the great Kappa Omini logo (one of my favorites in the world of sports). And apart from the centered number on the front this pretty much describes the entire jersey.

The style used for the number was rather plain and good looking. Overall, Kappa put in their best effort on their first jersey (unlike Nike) and I wish this shirt had gotten more attention. It is pretty much the perfect Azzurri shirt!

My rating: 10/10 stars.
