Real Madrid (Away 2013/14)

Real Madrid has shown a penchant of trying out new colors for its La Liga away jersey every year. After years of purple or black, we were also treated with a red and several gray and blue tones. This year marks a return to a bright blue tone which has been used before:

Although blue does not figure in the club’s color scheme, it is not an uncommon choice. This year, we are actually treated with a very nice and plain version of it with a round collar and white shoulder stripes. White is also used for the sponsor and the Adidas logo. However, on the sides there are also two thin orange stripes connecting this shirt with all the other 2013/14 jerseys. At least it is used in an extremely subtle way here and may have well been left out, too.

The back is surprisingly super plain with only the white name and number showing on the blue background. Of course the latter is applied in the brush-stroke font already used on the home and the UCL away jersey and is somewhat a contradiction to the otherwise plain look.

The blue may look unusual at first, but this is in my opinion the best Real Madrid jersey this season. Leaving out the orange entirely would have made it near-perfect. Here’s hoping next season will continue the plain trend (I am naive, am I?). Looking at eternal rivals Barcelona, I have to say this season Real Madrid wins at least the jersey clasico. We will see how things turn out on the pitch this weekend.

My rating: 8/10 stars.
