Brazil (Home 1980-81)

On we go in our little history of the Brazil jersey. In 1980 Brazil switched supplier – at least in name. Adidas had previously taken over Erima but continued the brand and at the time gave it some marquee teams. For instance at the 1978 World Cup West Germany was playing with Erima shirts. Two years later Brazil was supplied by Erima. The first big occasion on which this shirt was worn, was during the Copa De Oro (or Mundialito) in 1980 to celebrate 50 years of World Cup play. On the occasion all six past and present World Cup winners (Brazil, Italy, Uruguay, Germany, England and Argentina) had been invited and only England declined and was replaced by the Netherlands (then two-times WC runner-ups). As the inaugural World Cup the tournament was held in Montevideo and was won by the hosts who beat Brazil in the final 2-1.

On that occasion, we observe a return to a simpler jersey with a green round collar and green sleeve trims. The shade of the yellow became darker – almost too dark – and looks more golden. The crest was very well placed, but note the absence of the three stars. The Erima logo seems to be floating on the right side of the jersey and should have been lower.

Even 10 years on, the classic 1970s look survives, but the shade of the yellow makes this one also somewhat of an odd-man-out. You would expect such a yellow more from Australia than Brazil. Still, for the short time Brazil was sporting Erima kits they had a very classic look and were developing a team that compared quite favorably with the legendary team from 1970 – with the exception of one (minor?) detail.

My rating: 7/10 stars.
