Brazil (Home 1978-79)

For almost two decades Brazil are Nike’s marquee team in the world of soccer. But don’t you sometimes wonder how a Brazil kit manufactured by Adidas, the other main supplier of soccer shirts, may look like? well, you won’t need to wonder anymore because come 1978, Adidas supplied Brazil their version of the jersey with the three stripes – definitely the odd-man-out in the history of Brazil jerseys.

However, considering the fact that this jersey features the three stripes, the shirt still looks quite classic. The green round collar as well as the green sleeve trims are still present. Probably foreshadowing the many ways green can be applied by Nike in addition to this jersey, Adidas did add the three green shoulder stripes to the shirt. Note that while the picture above shows the Adidas logo, it was not displayed on the shirts at the World Cup in Argentina. As usual, the crest is very well placed.

On the back the player’s number was applied in green in a classic Adidas font – I like it. Also note the different fonts for shirt and pants.

Overall, this is a very nice Brazil jersey, but it just looks odd to see Brazil with three shoulder stripes. At the time this was by far the busiest jersey Brazil has ever worn – although nothing compared to today’s standards. Add to it the fact that barring the Argentinian/Peruvian conspiracy, Brazil may well have won that World Cup, so it is an absolute classic.

My rating: 7/10 stars.
