Sporting CP (UCL Jersey 2014/15)

One of the most popular teams in Portugal, Sporting is currently struggling to keep pace with their internationally better known rivals Benfica and Porto. Well, qualifying for the Champions League certainly is a start. The green-and-whites are back again, but the competition has not been particularly nice to them. Well, maybe the arrival of Nani will give the team a spark. Instead of looking at the classic home jersey that new supplier Macron dished up, I elect to feature the Champions League jersey, though. Let’s see if Sporting manages to go further in European competition, we may have a look at more jerseys. 🙂

Well, this shirt is a bit unusual and not so classic despite its classic look. Still, there are quite some things to like here: Instead of the horizontal green hoops (similar to Celtic), we have a dark green jersey with lighter green sleeves and a white stading collar. The collar features a buttoned opening which is lined in white. Almost typically for Macron kits, the supplier logo is riding a bit high and so is the club’s crest (wouldn’t it make sense if Adidas were the supplier given the three stripes in the crest?) and the white sponsor. Colorwise everything does fit nicely although I probably would have preferred the sleeves to be in the same color as the rest of the shirt. This way, it looks more like a vest, but that may become a fashion now. However, the best detail is the big lion on the left chest just behind the crest. I really think it would look even better if things were shifted down a bit, but this is a great feature!

The back is much like the front, but features a yellow lion just below the collar. Names and numbers are appropriately applied in white with the font used in the Champions League pictured above being quite rounded, but well legible.

I really think the shirt looks well, but I do have to question the motive of releasing it. Well, the market is lucrative and new suppliers now have to stand out and release a lot of shirts. After all the fans will buy it anyway! The front could look less crammed on the top, but that is pretty much it. Yes, the sleeves, but then I think it is not that bad.

My rating: 8/10 stars.
