PFC CSKA Moscow (Away 2014/15)

One more from Russia, where the former army team from the capital is slowly becoming a Champions League regular: CSKA Moscow. As the former club of the army it surely was not the most popular team, but seemingly the team is shedding its roots. And hosting Champions League matches surely does not hurt either – especially if they are successful and include wins at current English champions Manchester city. The shirt CSKA was wearing against City actually caught my eyes and I want to have a look at it:

Well, camouflage kits are not that original anymore, but in this case it fits quite well – CSKA is after all the (former?) team of the army. I also like that unlike last year’s Napoli camouflage kits, this one is quite understated in that it is mainly white with a grey camopattern which is denser on the top. The sleeves only feature a grey band and a re white otherwise, giving the kit more of a vest-look. The round collar is also grey with darker grey stripes running down the shoulder. The same color is used for the Adidas logo and the sponsor giving it all a very unified look. I also must applaud the supplier for not camouflaging the club’s crest but instead keeping it full color!

Unfortuantely, there is no camo on the back which is rather plain white with a black arc and names and numbers in a plain black font.

Well, the purist in me may bemoan the lack of reference to the club’s colors, but I think this does not matter too much here, since the pattern is a reference to the club’s history. I will never totally be convinced by the camouflage pattern and I think Adidas should have gone all the way here by adding it to the sleeves and the back, too. But this is certainly the best application of it. Most of all, it is subtle!

My rating: 8/10 stars.
